Five point some one - Chetan Bhagat

This novel narrates the story of three IIT graduates and their life at India's Premier Technology Institute. The story is all about their friendship and differences, study and enjoyment, career and ambition, parental pressure and peer pressure, love and sex. And as the subtitle of the novel – What not to do at IIT – suggests, "This is not a book to teach you how to get into IIT or even how to live in college. In fact, it describes how screwed up things can get if you don't think straight." The author Chetan Bhagat himself is an IIT and /IIM graduate. He worked in Hong Kong and then relocated to India and working in an investment bank apart from writing books and screen plays. He is author of three novels Five Point Someone (2004), One Night @ the call center (2005) and recently The 3 Mistakes of my Life (2008). The New York Times quoted him as the “biggest selling English author in India’s history”. Title of the novel “Five point some one” is taken form GPA system used in IIT. In the ranking system in III five points are considered average rank. Hari, Alok and Ryan are three main characters. They are roommates and studding in the same department at IIT. These three strange students became close friends after a ranging session by seniors and they stand up for each other’s during the four years at IIT on every occasion, despite their personal conflicts several issues. They are far from the image of an IIT graduate is generally perceived to be and more like an average middle class youth. In the novel Hari narrates the story. He is an average in study, seems confused but he keeps all three fiends together, always taking the easy way out, fall in love and had sex with the daughter of his head of the department. Ryan is son of rich parents, a born rebellion. He hates his parents, as he feels neglected by them. He wants to be innovator and he thinks that the IIT system puts hurdle in one’s innovation. Alok belongs to a typical lower Indian middle class family, burdened with lots of expectations and responsibility. He wants to get good GPA so that he can get a good job and support his family. This makes him some times selfish. They found themselves stuck in IIT system. They get bored with study, assignments and projects and wanted to enjoy the life and have fun to its fullest. This leads to their lower GPA in class quiz and exams. They managed to secure hardly 5 points GPA at a scale of 10, ranking near the end of their class. And this means the end of their bright career. The story describes the ups and downs of their life in campus. Their reaction on scoring lowest GPA in the class, how they are perceived by students and professors on the basis of their GPA, their affection, their conflicts, their drinking habit and their strategy to beat the system. Meanwhile Hari fell into an affair with Neha, daughter of his head of department, Professor Cherian. When these three friends were in a great trouble, they found another professor Veera. He keeps confidence on his student and inspires them to think and act differently. He become the mentor of the three friends and supports them when they needed most. When the three friends realized that their future is at the stake they make a plan to steal the paper from his professor’s office. What happened to their plan? What happened to their career and dream? Would Hari able to get married with Neha? Would Ryan succeed in his innovation? Would Alok lived up to the
expectations of his family? If you have never read any English novel, I strongly recommend you to start with this one. The novel is of only 270 pages and written in very simple English. The book is written in conversational style, which gives a feeling that events are happening in front of you. Characters and story seems very real, except some points like appearing in viva after taking a glass of vodka, but its ok since it is a work of fiction. At the end author Chetan Bhagat wonderfully conveys the message of the novel in the form of convocation speech.

Alchemist- Paulo Coelho

ALCHEMIST

The Alchemist  is an exciting novel by Coelho Paulo .It is the kind of novel that tells you that everything is possible as long as you really want it to happen. The novel is all about a shepherd boy Santiago he in turns searching for a treasure . The information about treasure is revealed to him by a dram. And he is following his dream to find the treasure. The novel appeals to everybody, because we can all identify our selves with Santiago: all of us have dreams, and are dying for somebody to tell us that they may come.
The book is a simple story of a simple shepherd boy who has a dream and the courage to follow it. The novel skillfully combines words of wisdom, philosophy, and simplicity of meaning and language, which makes it particularly readable and accounts for its bestselling status. The Alchemist follows the journey of a shepherd boy named Santiago. Santiago, believe that the dream to be  decides to travel to a i nearby town to discover its meaning. A gypsy woman tells him that there is a treasure in the pyramids of Egypt.
Early into his journey, he meets an old king, who tells him to sell his sheep to travel to Egypt and introduces the idea of a Personal Legend.Your Personal Legend is what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their Personal Legend is. He adds that when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. This is the core theme of the book.
Along the way, Santiago meets an Englishman and continues his travel with him. They travel through the Sahara desert and during his journey, Santiago meets and falls in love with a beautiful Arabian woman named Fatima. He asks Fatima to marry him, but she says she will only marry him after he finds his treasures. He is perplexed by this, but later learns that true love will not stop one's Personal Legend, and if it does, it is not true love.
Santiago then encounters a lone alchemist who also teaches him about Personal Legends. He says that people want to find only the treasure of their Personal Legends but not the Personal Legend itself. Santiago feels unsure about himself as he listens to the alchemist's teachings. The alchemist states: Those who don't understand their Personal Legends will fail to comprehend its teachings. It is also stated that treasure is more worthy than gold.
The author believes that each one of us has a dream given to us by God and He gives us clues times again and again so that we recognize those clues and follow these dreams with great zeal. Each one of us has a destiny. To discover these destinies and then follow them is the purpose of our lives. Difficult will be the challenges of the unknown, but what is easy is not eternal, it's finite and the unknown is infinite.
The book is a simple story of a simple shepherd boy who has a dream and the courage to follow it. The novel skillfully combines words of wisdom, philosophy, and simplicity of meaning and language, which makes it particularly readable and accounts for its bestselling status. Perhaps this is the secret of Coelho's success: that he tells people what they want to hear, or rather that he tells them that what they wish for but never thought possible.
The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho is a book for those who have lost the dream or never had it. It's a book targeted to our world of lost wisdom; for a world in which temporary joy prevails pure joy. It is for the youth which has forgotten to question itself; for the middle-age men who in their busy day have forgotten their real identity and their dreams. It is a book for the people who are not in harmony with the self in them, because they don't follow the person they want to be but the person others want them to be. The book reveals us that always believe in the person you are. Always be the person you want to be and not the person that others want you to be and remember worth what you have because the treasure lies in you.

Wings of Fire

WINGS OF FIRE
This book sums up how APJ Abdul Kalam went through various stages in his life starting from his childhood in Rameswaram to the stage prior to his ascent to Rashtrapathi Bhavan in Delhi.
It depicts various projects he was associated with in the areas of aeronautics, space research and defence development like Hovercraft Nandi, RATO, SLV and Missile program and both the agonizing moments and the ecstatic moments he went through in that process.

It conveys the message how a person's patriotic commitment to the development of indigenous technology motivates a person to spend long hours and sustain hurdles, despite being perturbed by the deaths of close family members one by one. It proves the point that how motivating mentors/managers/leaders like Dr.Vikram Sarabhai and Dr.Brahm Prakash can mold a young engineer like APJ into a highly accomplished technocrat and make him bounce back to action with a redoubled enthusiasm after heart-breaking personal and career setbacks.
It talks about how APJ was an effective project manager who projected his teammembers more to the higher hierarchy than himself. It mentions his elder sister's love toward him who mortgaged her gold ornaments to pay for his admission to Madras Institute of Technology(MIT) which is so typical for any middle-class Indian. The following consoling words by Swami Sivananda to APJ after he fails in his first job interview in Indian Air Force are notable:
" Accept your destiny and go ahead with your life. You are not destined to become an Air Force pilot. What you are destined to become is not revealed now but it is predetermined. Forget this failure, as it was essential to lead you to your destined path. Search instead, for the true purpose of your existence. Become one with yourself, my son ! Surrender yourself to the wish of God" Those words proved right as his life progressed. Credit goes to Arun Tiwari who asked APJ about his memoirs and helped him in coming out with this book. This is a book worth gifting to any child or youth  to make them gain a good perspective on the evolution of India into a technological power.

The alchemist

The Alchemist

The Alchemist is a fable about a shepherd boy (named Santiago but referred to as just "the boy" throughout the book) from the Andalusia area of Southern Spain. He lives a simple shepherd life, herding his sheep from place to place, finding them good food to eat and clean water to drink, and occasionally selling their fleece to fill his purse. He is simple and innocent and his needs are few, but he craves excitement and adventure, and he wants to travel and see the world. One day he meets an old god/king (the fabled King of Salem, Melchizedek) who promises to tell him where to find treasure, in exchange for one tenth of his flock of sheep. The boy, believing in omens, and that the omens are guiding him, gives the sheep to the old man.
Let me say one thing first. This is no grand, epic novel, littered with obscure adjectives. This is no Dickensian tale of lust, social commentary and wit, although it does contain elements of these properties. Conversely, it is an extremely simple story, charting one boy's progress  through life, and how he aspires to ever greater goals. But it is every bit           as effective, moving and poetic as any  novel one could care to name.
Indeed, the simple writing style, basic story, consisting of perhaps five significant characters, serve to underpin the morals and messages that are so strongly conveyed to the reader much more effectively then any more intricate structure could. Because in the end, this is a book with only one real message, follow your  heart and your dreams.
We of the modern age pile far too much scorn upon such simple, idealistic ideas. But what this story brings out is a yearning for a better existence, a more magical and less  cynical one. Any book that can draw  such strong emotion is surely  a worthy one. Do not read this book expecting wonders of prose, although  Coelho's writing is beautifully poetic  at times, stark yet effective, "His hands  were abraded and exhausted, but he  listened to his heart. It had told him to dig where his tears fell".
Perhaps  Coelho's greatest  achievement is how The Alchemist  truly does make you appreciate the  beauty of life, how the wonders here  on this Earth can equal the ones in  Coelho's short tale. After reading this,  it is much harder to take what we have  for  granted. I cannot commend this  story enough, and it is testament to  Coelho's writing skill that he can  make such a moving tale out of such  simple ingredients, and in such a short space. Sensational is the only word

Dracula - Bram Stoker

Dracula is an 1897 Gothic horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. In the late nineteenth century, Jonathan Harker, a young English lawyer, is traveling to the Castle Dracula, which is located in Transylvania, in order to finalize a transfer of real estate in England to Count Dracula. Harker becomes extremely nervous when all of the local peasants react in fear after they hear of his destination; nevertheless, he continues on to the castle until he meets an emissary of the Count in the Borgo Pass. The mysterious coach driver continues on to the castle, arriving in pitch darkness, to the accompaniment of howling wolves.
Even though his accomodations are comfortable, Harker finds Count Dracula to be a pale, gaunt, thin man, rather strange, and Harker is mortified when, after accidentally cutting himself shaving, the Count lunges at Harker's throat in "demoniac fury." Harker soon finds himself imprisoned within the castle and assailed by three seductive female vampires, whom he can barely stave off. Harker also discovers the Count's secret — that is, the Count survives by drinking the blood of human beings — and, now, he is intent on killing Harker. The Count escapes Jonathan's attempt to kill him, and he swiftly leaves the castle with fifty boxes of earth, bound for England. The last we hear of Jonathan Harker, he is weak and sick, left alone with no visible means of escape from the castle.
The novel then shifts to England, where Harker's fiancée, Mina Murray, is visiting her friend Lucy Westenra, who has accepted the marriage proposal of Arthur Holmwood, while rejecting the proposals of Dr. John Seward, head of a lunatic asylum, and Quincey Morris, an American from Texas, currently visiting Holmwood. Mina's two main concerns are that Lucy has taken up her old habit of sleepwalking, and that it is a long time since she has heard from her own fiancé, Jonathan.
One night while the two women are out walking, they witness the approach of a strange ship. When the ship is wrecked on the beach, the only creature which survives is a huge dog, which quickly disappears. We soon discover that the wrecked ship is carrying fifty boxes of earth from the Castle Dracula.
Soon after the shipwreck, late one night, Mina discovers that Lucy is sleepwalking again. In her search, Mina discovers Lucy on the ladies' favorite seat, near the graveyard overlooking the town. Mina is shocked to see hovering over Lucy a tall, thin, black shape, but when she arrives at Lucy's side the shape has disappeared. When awakened, Lucy remembers nothing of what has happened, except that she is chilled. In wrapping Lucy against the cold, Mina assumes that she inadvertently pricked Lucy with a pin, for she sees two tiny red marks on Lucy's neck. On later, successive nights, Lucy is often found standing at the women's bedroom window; next to her is a creature which appears to be a large bird, but it is, in fact, a bat. Lucy's health declines over the next few weeks, and because of this Mina refuses to tell Lucy about Lucy's mother's sickness. Meanwhile, Dr. Seward, Lucy's former suitor, is unable to ascertain the cause of Lucy's decline.
Soon, Mina hears from Jonathan, and so she leaves Lucy and goes to nurse him. Almost immediately, Lucy's condition deteriorates, and Dr. Seward finds it necessary to wire for his old friend and mentor, Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, who offers another medical opinion. Van Helsing is particularly disturbed by the two tiny spots on Lucy's throat and her apparent but unexplainable loss of blood since there are no signs of hemorrhage.
It becomes necessary to give Lucy numerous blood transfusions, and after each one she improves significantly, only to deteriorate quickly in the next couple of days. Van Helsing finally deems it necessary to drape Lucy's room, as well as her neck, with garlic, a technique, we learn later, which is used to ward off vampires. Eventually, however, the vampire manages to evade the spells against him, and he attacks Lucy again. One significant night, an escaped wolf is used to smash the window of Lucy's room. The wolf's attack so frightens Lucy's mother that she dies of shock, and Lucy, left helpless, is again attacked by the vampire.
Van Helsing, knowing that Lucy is near death, summons her fiancé, Arthur Holmwood, to her side. Holmwood himself comes from the deathbed of his father. As Holmwood bends to kiss Lucy goodbye, Lucy, whose canine teeth have become strangely lengthened, attempts to attack Arthur. As Van Helsing throws Arthur back from her, Lucy dies.
After Lucy's death, the papers report the strange appearance of a person whom the village children label as "the Bloofer Lady," a creature who has been attacking young children in the area. Van Helsing, shaken by the reports, summons Dr. Seward to attend him in an examination of Lucy's coffin. After Seward's initial shock, he agrees, albeit with reservations, to open Lucy's coffin.
In the meantime, Mina and Jonathan have been married, and they return to England. Mina has transcribed Jonathan's diary of his journey in Transylvania, and soon afterward Van Helsing reads it. Van Helsing then calls all of Lucy's ex-suitors together, and he explains to them his belief that Lucy has been bitten by a vampire and has become one herself. The only way to save her soul, he says, is to drive a wooden stake through her heart, cut off her head and stuff it with garlic. Eventually Van Helsing convinces them of the truth of his claims, and the "service" is performed on Lucy.
Now the protagonists begin a search for the Count and also for the fifty boxes of earth which he brought with him to England; these six people — Jonathan, Mina, Dr. Seward, Van Helsing, Holmwood, and Quincey Morris — vow to confront the vampire. Soon after the search begins, Van Helsing realizes that a dreadful change is taking place in Mina. One horrific night, Van Helsing and Seward break into Mina's room, find Jonathan unconscious, and Mina being forced to suck blood from a deep slash across Dracula's chest. In a twinkling, Dracula disappears.
They finally discover and destroy all of the fifty boxes except one, which they learn has been sent by ship back to Dracula's castle. Using various methods, including the hypnosis of Mina, they follow Dracula all the way to the Borgo Pass in Transylvania, where they find the last remaining box being transported to Castle Dracula by a group of gypsies. They overcome the gypsies, throw the box to the ground, tear open its lid, and discover the body of the Count. With a huge thrust, Jonathan cuts off the vampire's head, while Morris drives his knife into the Count's heart. The Count himself crumbles into dust, and Quincey Morris, having been wounded by the gypsies in an attempt to retrieve the box, dies of a mortal wound, and so the novel ends.

It was published on 21 September 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives in Hobbit on. He is interrupted by a visit by the wizard Gandalf. Gandalf comes with a company of dwarves led by Thorin. They are embarking on a journey to recover lost treasure that is guarded by the dragon Smaug, at the Lonely Mountain. Gandalf has decided, that the hobbit will play the role of a burglar.
On the journey, Bilbo and the dwarves encounter all sorts of villains and obstacles. As they continue on their journey, Bilbo is depressed and nostalgic. After MORE difficulties, the group arrives at Smaug's mountain.
In these travels though, Bilbo is outwitted by a creature called Gollum, and gains a ring that makes him invisible. But the ring is especially needed when the group arrives at Smaug's mountain. Once there, Bilbo must go ahead and face the challenge. He follows the treacherous course into the heart of the cave, he is attracted by a red glow. This is the glow of Smaug. Bilbo manages to steal a cup and hurriedly exits but Smaug awakens and begins to rage.
The town, Esgaroth is victim to Smaug's terror, for the information that he learns from Bilbo gives him reason to believe that they are involved in the theft of his cup. Bard, the grim-faced man, is willing to challenge Snaug and he has help from a messenger bird, called a thrush. The thrush relays information that Bilbo discovered while in Smaug's lair: the hollow of Smaug's left breast is not plated with red-gold armor. When Bard strikes this spot, Smaug falls dead, his massive body crushing the city of Esgaroth.
The survivors seek Bard as their new king but Bard declines the offer, though he intends to establish his own city. As the news of Smaug's death spreads, various groups advance towards the mountain‹for there is treasure to be had.
Thorin continues to speak of the Arkenstone because it means so much to him, as it is an heirloom and he threatens to take revenge on whoever has prevented him from getting it. In spite of this, Bilbo decides that he will leave the mountain and offer the Arkenstone to Bard; then, Bard can offer the Arkenstone to Thorin in exchange for a fair portion of the treasure.
Battle erupts, it includes men, elves and dwarves. They are ready to attack one another until Gandalf announces the approach of the Goblins, bats, wolves and Wargs. The armies re-align and conduct what became known as the "Battle of Five Armies."
It is only with the final arrival of the Eagles, that the forces of good are sustained. Unfortunately, Bilbo is hit with a "stone hurtling from above...and he fell with a crash and knew no more."
Bilbo regains consciousness, he finds that he is alone and he has to take his ring off so that the individuals who were sent for him can find him. After recovering in the company of Gandalf, Bilbo makes his way back home and their journey though covering the same terrain is, far more pleasant and then it was befire (convenient).
Gandalf and Bilbo eventually make their way to Hobbit on. It is summer and Bilbo is disappointed to learn that he is legally dead. Greedy cousins are auctioning his property because he is "Presumed Dead." They are more than a little displeased at his arrival and it takes several years for Bilbo to sort out the legalisms.
